ULGA
Union of Lethbridge Graduate Assistants

The ULGA is the bargaining agent for academically employed graduate students (teaching and research assistants) at the University of Lethbridge. In December 2017, Alberta’s labour legislation changed, requiring the formation of a union to represent graduate workers at post-secondary institutions. In response to this change, ULGA was the first union in the province to submit formal documentation seeking official recognition. Approval was granted in 2018. That year, the Alberta Labour Relations Board formally recognized ULGA as the certified bargaining agent for graduate student workers. Since that time, ULGA representatives have actively worked to secure fair compensation, protections, and improved working conditions for graduate employees at the university. Their efforts include negotiating collective agreements, addressing workplace concerns, and ensuring that graduate workers’ rights are upheld within the academic environment.
